A historical watercolour and ink study by Piet Schipperus depicting the aftermath of the 1870 fire in Bodegraven, Netherlands.
This watercolour and ink study by Piet Schipperus documents the aftermath of a fire that devastated the Dutch town of Bodegraven on 31 May 1870. Schipperus, a Dutch artist known for his topographical and architectural subjects, captures the scene with a direct, observational approach. The composition focuses on the skeletal remains of buildings, with charred walls and piles of debris dominating the foreground.
The artist employs a limited palette of sepia, brown, and grey washes to convey the desolation of the site. The ink lines define the structural remnants, such as the standing chimney stacks and the remnants of a gateway, while the washes provide depth to the rubble. The work functions as a historical record, providing a visual account of the destruction caused by the fire.
Schipperus maintains a detached perspective, allowing the subject matter to communicate the severity of the event without unnecessary embellishment. The inclusion of the date and location in the artist's hand confirms its status as a contemporary reportage piece. The paper tone is integrated into the composition, serving as the base for the muted colour scheme. This piece offers a glimpse into the nineteenth-century practice of documenting local history through on-site sketching, a common method for artists before the widespread adoption of photography for such purposes. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to translate architectural ruin into a coherent visual narrative.
