A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting a Russian figure on horseback during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e art that emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan ended its policy of national isolation, artists began to document the arrival of foreigners in the port city of Yokohama. These prints functioned as visual news reports, satisfying public curiosity about the appearance, dress, and customs of people from distant lands.
The work depicts a Russian figure mounted on horseback. The subject wears a dark, structured military-style coat with blue epaulettes and a matching cap, reflecting the artist's interpretation of foreign attire. The horse is rendered with a stylised, rhythmic quality, typical of the period's approach to animal anatomy. The background is a flat, uniform yellow, which serves to isolate the figure and draw attention to the details of the costume and the horse's harness.
Utagawa Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became known for his prolific output of these foreign-themed prints. His work often features bold outlines and a clear, graphic sensibility. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally against the plain backdrop. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of black, grey, blue, and red to define the subject. This print provides a glimpse into the Japanese perception of the outside world during a period of rapid social and political change. It captures a moment of cultural encounter, filtered through the conventions of traditional woodblock printing techniques.
