A 19th-century Japanese woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a Russian soldier and his family during the opening of Japanese ports.
This woodblock print by Ippōsai Yoshifuji belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to foreign trade, artists documented the appearance and customs of Western visitors. This specific work depicts a Russian soldier accompanied by his family, rendered through the distinct stylistic lens of a Japanese printmaker.
The composition is relatively flat, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, yet it attempts to capture the unfamiliar details of Western attire. The soldier wears a heavy, fur-trimmed coat and a military cap, while his female companion is dressed in a structured gown with a patterned skirt. The artist uses a combination of traditional Japanese line work and a specific colour palette to interpret these foreign subjects. The text block on the right side of the print includes phonetic katakana characters, which attempt to transcribe the word 'Russian' into Japanese, reflecting the curiosity and linguistic experimentation of the era.
Ippōsai Yoshifuji was a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became known for his prints documenting the influx of foreigners in Yokohama. These works provided the Japanese public with visual information about the outside world. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and flat areas of colour. It serves as a historical record of the cultural exchange that occurred during the mid-nineteenth century. The figures are positioned against a simple yellow background, which draws attention to their clothing and physical features. This print is a representative example of how Japanese artists processed the arrival of Westerners, blending traditional artistic techniques with the documentation of contemporary events.
