A delicate woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri depicting a woman and children in a rural setting, featuring traditional calligraphy and soft ochre tones.
This woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri captures a quiet moment in a rural setting, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The composition features a woman carrying a shallow basket on her head, accompanied by two children who reach toward a flock of birds migrating across the sky. The background displays simplified, undulating hills and fields, rendered with minimal detail to maintain a focus on the human figures. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on soft ochre tones and subtle ink washes to convey the atmosphere of an autumn day.
Eiri, a contemporary of artists like Utamaro, often produced works that integrated poetry with visual imagery. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the print suggests this piece belongs to a series illustrating the Hyakunin Isshu, a famous anthology of one hundred poems. The figures are depicted with the elongated proportions characteristic of Eiri's style, while their garments feature restrained patterns that complement the overall composition. The print demonstrates the technical precision of late eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the interplay between negative space and line work creates a sense of balance. The birds, arranged in a gentle curve, guide the viewer's eye across the upper portion of the print, connecting the terrestrial scene below with the vastness of the sky. This work offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the observation of nature and the human experience were frequently intertwined in artistic production. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, preserving the original intent of the artist through the centuries.
