A detailed 1590 engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicting the biblical encounter between Ruth and Boaz within a rustic threshing shed.
This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicts a scene from the Book of Ruth, set within the rustic confines of a threshing shed. The composition balances the quiet intimacy of the interior with a glimpse of the exterior landscape. Boaz, an older man with a long beard, rests upon a pile of harvested grain, while Ruth stands nearby, her posture suggesting a moment of careful observation. The artist employs a high degree of technical precision, using varied line weights to define the textures of the straw, the wooden structure of the shed, and the folds of the figures' garments.
Goltzius was a master of the burin, and this work demonstrates his ability to create depth through cross-hatching and controlled tonal shifts. The shed interior is rendered with a sense of physical weight, contrasting with the lighter, more atmospheric treatment of the distant view visible through the open doorway. The inclusion of small details, such as the mice near the threshold and the agricultural tools leaning against the wall, adds a layer of narrative specificity to the biblical subject. The Latin and German inscriptions at the base of the print provide context for the encounter, framing the interaction between the two figures within the moral and theological framework of the period.
As a representative of Northern Mannerism, the work reflects the period's interest in complex spatial arrangements and the expressive potential of the human form. Goltzius manages to imbue the scene with a sense of stillness, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the surfaces of the shed. The print remains a fine example of late sixteenth-century Dutch graphic art, showcasing the technical rigour and narrative clarity that defined the artist's output during this period.
