This etching by the French draughtsman and printmaker Israël Silvestre depicts the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, one of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. Silvestre, who spent significant time in Italy during the mid-seventeenth century, produced a vast body of work documenting the architecture and urban fabric of the city. His approach to the veduta, or view painting, prioritises clarity and topographical accuracy over dramatic artifice.

The composition presents the church from a distance, allowing the viewer to observe the structure in relation to the surrounding Roman terrain. The tall, Romanesque campanile dominates the right side of the building, while the facade reflects the modifications made during the eighteenth century, though Silvestre captures the earlier state of the site. The foreground is populated with small figures, providing a sense of scale to the massive stone walls and the ruins visible to the left.
