A 1611 etching by Pieter Feddes van Harlingen depicting Saco Reinalda, the seventh potestaat of Friesland, complete with heraldic symbols and period detail.
This etching by Pieter Feddes van Harlingen depicts Saco Reinalda, the seventh potestaat of Friesland. Produced in 1611, the work is part of a series documenting the historical figures of the Frisian region. The composition follows the conventions of early seventeenth-century portraiture, placing the subject in a formal, symbolic environment. Reinalda stands centrally, dressed in period attire that suggests his status and authority. He holds a palm branch in one hand, a traditional iconographic element representing peace or victory, while his other hand gestures towards the surrounding space.
The background incorporates heraldic shields, which provide context regarding his lineage and official role. To the left, a table holds a hat and coins, further reinforcing the narrative of his governance. The artist employs a precise etching technique, using varied line weights to define the textures of the clothing, the facial features, and the decorative border that frames the scene. The border itself is filled with scrolling motifs, typical of the ornamental style favoured in Dutch printmaking of the period.
Pieter Feddes van Harlingen was a painter and etcher active in the Northern Netherlands. His work often focused on local history and portraiture, reflecting the interests of the Frisian elite. This print demonstrates his ability to combine historical documentation with the aesthetic sensibilities of the time. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the elements create a structured visual record. As a piece of historical ephemera, it offers insight into how regional leaders were represented and commemorated in the early 1600s. The print is a clear example of the graphic output produced for historical publications, where text and image worked in tandem to preserve the memory of Frisian figures.
