Description
Saddleworth Moor sets a domed stone tower against wide water and a dark plateau, drawing the eye from the dam's arches to the open Greater Manchester hills.
The copper-green cupola sits above a square masonry shaft, its doorway glowing above two broad arches. The reservoir's still surface repeats the tower in muted bands. Heather and pale lichen scatter across the rocks at right, while a band of dark conifers closes the far bank. Grey-blue clouds pile over the flat-topped ridge beyond.
At Saddleworth Moor, reservoirs and long routes give the edges of Greater Manchester a different pace from the city below. The image suits those who know the approach across the hills, where built waterworks meet rough ground and weather moving across the horizon.
