This engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts Saint Andrew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Andrew is traditionally associated with a distinctive cross, known as a crux decussata or Saint Andrew's Cross, which is an X-shaped cross. In this print, Andrew is shown holding a standard Latin cross, rather than the saltire cross more commonly associated with him. The saint is rendered with careful attention to the drapery and musculature, typical of Carracci's academic style. The background features a sparse depiction of the landscape. The print is executed with fine lines and cross-hatching to create tonal variations and a sense of depth. Carracci was a member of the Carracci family of artists, who were influential in the development of the Bolognese School of painting during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Carracci brothers, Agostino, Annibale, and their cousin Ludovico, aimed to reform Italian art by returning to classical principles and emphasising naturalism and clarity of form. Agostino Carracci was known for his skill as a printmaker, producing numerous engravings after his own designs and those of other artists.
