A detailed etching of Saint Andrew by Dutch master Jan van de Velde (II), capturing the apostle with his traditional cross in a refined, classical style.
This etching by Jan van de Velde (II) depicts Saint Andrew, the apostle, identified by the X-shaped cross against which he leans. Van de Velde, a master of printmaking during the Dutch Golden Age, employs a precise linear technique to define the figure and his surroundings. The saint is shown in profile, his gaze directed upwards, while his robes are rendered with controlled hatching to suggest volume and weight.
The composition balances the verticality of the cross with the architectural elements on the right, including a stone pedestal and a hanging cloth. In the background, a simplified tree and a suggestion of water provide a modest setting for the figure. Van de Velde was known for his technical versatility, and this work demonstrates his ability to create tonal variation through the density of his etched lines. The contrast between the light-filled sky and the shadowed folds of the saint's garments creates a clear sense of form.
As a printmaker, Van de Velde contributed to the dissemination of religious iconography in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. His approach to the human figure reflects the influence of contemporary artistic conventions, where anatomical accuracy is balanced with symbolic representation. The work is typical of the period's interest in small-scale, portable devotional imagery. The clean lines and clear composition make this a representative example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in Haarlem during the early seventeenth century. This print offers a view into the technical skill required for etching, where the artist must translate complex textures and light effects into a series of marks on a copper plate.
