A detailed Baroque engraving depicting the visionary appearance of Saint Augustine to Saint Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi.
This print by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi depicts a visionary encounter between Saint Augustine of Hippo and the Carmelite mystic Saint Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century Italian printmaking, utilising a clear division between the terrestrial realm occupied by the kneeling saint and the celestial sphere where Augustine appears amidst clouds and putti.
Saint Augustine is shown in his bishop's regalia, gesturing towards the saint below. His figure is supported by a cluster of cherubs, a common device in Baroque iconography to suggest divine presence. Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi is positioned in the lower right, her posture reflecting a state of religious ecstasy. She holds a book, suggesting her role as a contemplative figure. The architectural elements, including the classical columns, provide a sense of spatial depth, while the background landscape visible through the opening adds a secondary layer of detail to the scene.
De' Rossi was a prominent figure in the Roman print trade, operating a successful publishing house that disseminated works by various artists. This specific engraving demonstrates the technical precision typical of the period, with varied line weights used to define the textures of the ecclesiastical robes, the soft forms of the clouds, and the architectural stone. The play of light, suggested through cross-hatching and stippling, creates a sense of drama consistent with the Counter-Reformation aesthetic. The work serves as a record of the hagiographic traditions popular in Italy during the late seventeenth century, focusing on the mystical experiences of saints as a subject for devotional imagery. The balance between the human figures and the supernatural elements is managed through careful arrangement, ensuring the narrative remains legible despite the density of the composition.
