A nineteenth-century albumen print depicting the exterior of St Blasius Church in Shanklin, captured by Dutch photographer Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht.
This albumen print captures the exterior of St Blasius Church in Shanklin, Isle of Wight. The image is part of a larger photographic collection by Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht, a Dutch diplomat and amateur photographer who documented his travels across Britain during the late nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the church structure, framed by mature trees and the quiet presence of the surrounding churchyard.
The architecture of St Blasius, with its distinctive shingled spire and stone walls, is rendered with the soft tonal range characteristic of the albumen process. The ivy clinging to the masonry adds texture to the facade, while the path leading to the entrance provides a clear sense of scale and depth. The presence of headstones in the foreground suggests the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of the site during the Victorian era.
Van Wieldrecht often utilised his camera to record the vernacular architecture and rural character of the British Isles. His work provides a historical record of these sites before the significant modifications of the twentieth century. The print remains mounted on its original album page, complete with the handwritten annotation 'Kerk. Shanklin' in the lower margin. This piece offers a glimpse into the personal archives of a traveller who possessed a keen eye for the quiet corners of the English countryside. The technical execution reflects the standard practices of amateur photography of the period, prioritising clarity and documentation over artistic manipulation. It is a straightforward, honest representation of a site that has long served the local community of Shanklin.
