Ribera, also known as José de Ribera and as Jusepe Ribera in Spanish, spent most of his active life in Italy, specifically Naples, then part of the Spanish Empire. His work is characterised by its tenebrism and naturalism, influenced by Caravaggio and the masters of the Italian Renaissance. In this painting, Saint Christopher is portrayed as a muscular, weathered man, his face etched with the signs of age and labour. He carries the infant Christ on his shoulders, who holds a globe, symbolising his dominion over the world. The composition is dramatic, with strong contrasts of light and shadow that emphasise the figures' physicality and emotional intensity. The colour palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, typical of Ribera's style, which adds to the sense of realism and immediacy.
