A nineteenth-century engraving by Heinrich Nüsser depicting Saint Clara of Assisi, holding a book and lilies, produced for devotional distribution.
This engraving by Heinrich Nüsser depicts Saint Clara of Assisi, the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies. Nüsser, a German engraver associated with the Düsseldorf School, produced this work for the Verein zur Verbreitung religiöser Bilder, an organisation dedicated to the dissemination of devotional imagery. The print reflects the technical precision characteristic of nineteenth-century reproductive engraving, utilising fine lines and cross-hatching to model the saint's habit and the soft folds of her veil.
Saint Clara is shown in a traditional half-length pose, holding a book and a spray of lilies. The lily serves as a conventional attribute representing purity, while the book signifies her devotion to the Franciscan rule. The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, with the saint's head encircled by a simple, understated halo. The artist employs a restrained tonal range, focusing on the clarity of form and the gentle expression of the subject. The lower margin includes the title, S. Clara, alongside the credit for the publisher in Düsseldorf. This piece is representative of the mass-produced religious art that circulated throughout Europe during the mid-nineteenth century, intended for private contemplation or inclusion in devotional publications. The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship applied to religious subjects during this period, prioritising a clear, legible aesthetic that aligns with the pedagogical aims of the Düsseldorf School. The paper remains in a condition consistent with its age, maintaining the integrity of the original engraved lines.
