This engraving by Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) depicts Saint Francis of Assisi being consoled by an angel playing a stringed instrument. Carracci, an Italian painter and printmaker, was a significant figure in the late Mannerist and early Baroque periods. He was part of the Carracci family of artists who founded an art academy in Bologna that promoted a return to classical principles and naturalism in art. The print shows Saint Francis resting his head on a skull, a memento mori, while an angel descends from the heavens to play music for him.
