El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos, produced numerous variations of Saint Francis in prayer during his time in Toledo. This particular composition captures the saint in a moment of intense spiritual contemplation. The figure of Saint Francis is rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive, fluid brushwork characteristic of the artist's mature style. His habit, painted in muted, cool tones, contrasts with the stark, dark background, drawing the viewer's focus to his gaunt features and the stigmata visible on his hand.
