Bolswert, a skilled engraver from the Dutch Republic, worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens to translate the painter's compositions into print. Ignatius is shown in a standing position, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial light containing the IHS monogram. He wears an ornate chasuble decorated with scrolling patterns, which contrasts with the simpler fabric of his alb. His left hand rests upon an open book inscribed with the Jesuit motto, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam. The composition is balanced by a stone pedestal on the right and a biretta suspended in the upper left corner.
