An engraving by Agostino Carracci depicting Saint James Major, one of the Twelve Apostles, rendered in fine lines and classical style.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) depicts Saint James Major, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Carracci was an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist, who was a central figure in the development of the Bolognese School of painting. He and his brothers, Annibale and Ludovico, founded an art academy called Accademia degli Incamminati, which promoted a style that drew inspiration from the Venetian Renaissance, particularly the works of artists such as Titian and Veronese. In this print, Saint James is shown as an elderly bearded man, holding a staff and wearing a draped cloak. A halo surrounds his head, inscribed with his name in Latin. The engraving is executed with fine, precise lines, typical of Carracci's printmaking style. The composition is simple and direct, focusing on the figure of the saint against a minimal background. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates a sense of depth and volume, while the overall effect is one of clarity and classical restraint.
