An engraving by Agostino Carracci depicting Saint James Minor, identified by his halo and traditional attributes: a builder's square and a club. The work demonstrates Carracci's skill as a draughtsman and printmaker.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) depicts Saint James Minor, one of the Twelve Apostles. Carracci was an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist, and along with his brother Annibale Carracci and cousin Ludovico Carracci, founded the Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna. This academy was instrumental in the development of Baroque art. Agostino was celebrated for his refined draughtsmanship and his skill as a printmaker, producing numerous engravings and etchings after his own designs and those of other artists. The print presents Saint James as an elderly man with a halo, holding a builder's square and a club, his traditional attributes. The saint is draped in voluminous robes, rendered with fine, closely-spaced lines that create a sense of depth and texture. The background features a simple, slightly undulating ground and a cloudy sky, typical of the period. The composition is straightforward, focusing attention on the figure of the saint and his symbolic objects. Carracci's technical skill is evident in the precise lines and the subtle gradations of tone, which give the print a sense of three-dimensionality.
