A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Domenico Cunego depicting Saint Jerome in contemplation, featuring the traditional symbols of a crucifix and skull.
This fine art print reproduces the work of Domenico Cunego, an Italian engraver active in Rome during the eighteenth century. The composition depicts Saint Jerome, a central figure in Christian iconography, shown in a moment of quiet contemplation. The saint is presented with his traditional attributes: a crucifix held in his hands and a human skull resting upon a rock, symbols of mortality and penance.
Cunego demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in his use of line and shadow. The musculature of the saint is rendered with precision, using varied hatching techniques to create volume and depth. The play of light across the figure draws the eye to the saint's expression, which conveys a sense of solemnity and introspection. The background remains relatively dark, allowing the illuminated form of the saint to emerge from the shadows.
This print was published in Rome by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter and antiquarian who played a role in the dissemination of classical and Renaissance art through high-quality reproductive prints. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, which favoured clarity, anatomical accuracy, and a restrained emotional tone. The print captures the texture of the drapery and the weathered appearance of the saint with great care. It is a representative example of the reproductive print culture that allowed European audiences to engage with masterworks of the Italian tradition. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base provides context for the subject and the publication history of the plate. This piece offers a glimpse into the collaborative relationship between engravers and publishers in the eighteenth-century Roman art market.
