A detailed etching by Dutch Golden Age artist Willem van der Vliet, depicting Saint Jerome in a moment of quiet, kneeling prayer.
This etching depicts Saint Jerome, a central figure in Christian iconography, captured in a moment of quiet devotion. The artist, Willem van der Vliet, employs a controlled use of line to define the form of the saint, who is shown kneeling with hands clasped in prayer. His gaze is directed downwards, suggesting a state of internal reflection. Beside him, the traditional attribute of the lion is rendered with cross-hatched shading, grounding the figure within the established visual tradition of the saint in the wilderness.
The composition relies on the contrast between the illuminated figure of Jerome and the surrounding space. Van der Vliet uses varying densities of etched lines to create volume in the drapery of the saint's robes and to suggest the texture of the lion's mane. A simple vessel sits on a ledge in the background, providing a sense of domesticity to the otherwise austere setting. The work reflects the technical approach common among Dutch printmakers of the early seventeenth century, who prioritised clarity of form and emotive expression through the medium of the copper plate.
Van der Vliet, active in Delft, was known for his portraiture and historical subjects. This print demonstrates his ability to translate the gravity of religious themes into a smaller, more intimate format. The focus remains on the physical posture of the saint, which conveys a sense of humility and concentration. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs the viewer to the act of prayer itself. The print serves as an example of the period's interest in the solitary life of the ascetic, a theme that resonated with contemporary audiences who valued personal piety and the study of religious texts.
