An etching by Jusepe de Ribera depicts Saint Jerome, one of the Doctors of the Church, seated in a rocky landscape, absorbed in reading a manuscript. A skull rests near his feet, a vanitas symbol of mortality.
Jusepe de Ribera, a leading painter and printmaker of the Spanish Baroque period, created this etching of Saint Jerome. Ribera, also known as Lo Spagnoletto, spent most of his career in Naples, then part of the Spanish Empire. His work combines Spanish, Italian, and Flemish influences, characterised by tenebrism and naturalism. He was influenced by Caravaggio and the masters of the Venetian school. Ribera produced a number of prints, mainly in the 1620s, which are highly regarded for their technical skill and dramatic compositions. This etching depicts Saint Jerome, one of the Doctors of the Church, seated in a rocky landscape. Jerome is shown as an elderly, gaunt figure, absorbed in reading a manuscript. A skull rests near his feet, a vanitas symbol of mortality. Behind him is a lion, a traditional attribute of the saint, referencing the story of Jerome removing a thorn from the animal's paw. The composition is rendered with a network of fine lines, creating a sense of depth and texture. The stark contrast between light and shadow enhances the dramatic effect, typical of Ribera's style.
