This etching by Agostino Carracci depicts Saint Jerome, a Doctor of the Church, surrounded by a group of mourners. Carracci, an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist, was a central figure in the development of the Bolognese School of painting, which sought to revive classical ideals in art. He was the brother of Annibale Carracci and cousin of Ludovico Carracci; together, they founded an art academy called the Accademia degli Incamminati. The print shows Saint Jerome kneeling at the centre, his body emaciated, while other figures express grief and contemplation. Above, angels float within an arched opening. The composition is characterised by fine, detailed lines that create a sense of depth and texture. The use of hatching and cross-hatching adds tonal variation to the scene. The skull in the lower left serves as a memento mori, a reminder of mortality, a common motif in depictions of Saint Jerome.
