A serene rural scene by Maximilien Luce, capturing a sun-dappled Norman farmstead with livestock and a figure in the orchard.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, captured the quiet rhythms of rural life in this depiction of a Norman farmstead. The composition centres on a sun-dappled orchard, where the dappled light filters through the canopy to create a mosaic of colour upon the grass. In the foreground, two pigs forage near the base of a gnarled tree, while a solitary figure tends to poultry in the middle distance. The background features the characteristic timber-framed architecture of the Normandy region, rendered with warm, earthy tones that contrast with the cool greens and blues of the foliage.
Luce moved away from the strict pointillist technique of his earlier years, adopting a more fluid, painterly approach that allowed for greater spontaneity in his brushwork. This work reflects his interest in the daily activities of agrarian workers and the specific atmospheric conditions of the French countryside. The application of paint is rhythmic, with short, directional strokes that build the form of the trees and the texture of the meadow. By focusing on the interplay of shadow and light, Luce conveys the warmth of a summer day in Saint-Laurent-en-Caux. The scene avoids idealisation, presenting instead a grounded view of a working farm. It is a study of light and domestic activity, typical of the artist's later period when he sought to capture the essence of the French provinces through a personal, observational lens. The balance between the domestic animals and the human presence creates a sense of harmony, typical of the pastoral subjects that occupied much of his output during the turn of the century.
