An engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts Saint Lucy, the patron saint of sight, holding her symbols: a palm frond and a chalice containing eyes. The fine lines and shading showcase Carracci's skill as an engraver.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) depicts Saint Lucy, a Christian martyr who is the patron saint of those with eye ailments. Carracci was an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist, who, along with his brother Annibale and cousin Ludovico, founded the Carracci Academy in Bologna. This institution was influential in the development of Baroque art. Agostino was known for his refined engraving technique and his ability to translate painterly effects into print. In this print, Saint Lucy is shown holding a palm frond, symbolising martyrdom, and a chalice containing two eyes, her attribute as the protector of sight. The composition is simple, with the saint occupying most of the frame. The background is filled with horizontal lines, which create a sense of depth and contrast with the figure. Carracci's skill as an engraver is evident in the fine lines and shading, which give the print a sense of volume and texture. The print is a fine example of Carracci's ability to combine technical skill with artistic expression.
