A devotional panel painting by the Florentine master Neri di Bicci, depicting Saint Margaret of Antioch with her traditional attributes of the palm and dragon.
This panel painting by Neri di Bicci depicts Saint Margaret of Antioch, a figure frequently represented in Italian Renaissance art. The artist, a member of a prominent Florentine family of painters, maintained a busy workshop that produced numerous devotional works for local churches and private patrons. His style is characterised by a clear, linear approach and a preference for traditional compositions that remained popular throughout the fifteenth century.
In this work, Saint Margaret is shown in a half-length pose, set against a gilded background that reflects the light and provides a sense of spiritual elevation. She holds a palm frond, the traditional symbol of martyrdom, and is accompanied by the dragon, which appears at the lower left. The figure wears a red tunic beneath a dark mantle, creating a contrast that draws the eye to her serene expression. The halo is incised into the gold leaf, a technique that adds texture and depth to the surface of the panel.
Neri di Bicci was known for his meticulous record-keeping, documented in his diary, which provides insight into the daily operations of a Renaissance studio. His work often prioritised clarity and accessibility, making these images suitable for personal prayer and contemplation. The painting retains the original pointed arch format, typical of panels intended for polyptychs or smaller altarpieces. The preservation of the gold leaf and the application of tempera paint demonstrate the technical skill employed in the workshop to ensure the longevity of such devotional objects. This print captures the specific qualities of the original panel, from the delicate modelling of the saint's features to the decorative patterns etched into the gilded ground.
