A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Cornelis Visscher depicting Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar, rendered with technical precision.
This engraving by Cornelis Visscher depicts the legendary act of Saint Martin of Tours, who famously shared his military cloak with a beggar. Visscher, a skilled Dutch engraver active in Haarlem, produced this work after a design by Pieter Soutman. The composition focuses on the interaction between the mounted saint and the kneeling figure, capturing the moment of charity with technical precision.
Visscher employs a range of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the textures of the horse, the armour, and the fabric of the cloak. The saint is shown in contemporary seventeenth-century military attire rather than historical Roman dress, a common practice in Dutch art of the period. The horse is rendered with muscular detail, its posture suggesting movement, while the beggar is positioned in the foreground to create a sense of depth. The Latin and Dutch inscriptions at the base provide context regarding the saint's role as a patron of Utrecht, reflecting the religious and civic identity of the era.
As a master of the burin, Visscher demonstrates his ability to translate tonal values into linear patterns. The print exhibits the clarity and control associated with the Haarlem school of printmaking. The light source is directed to illuminate the saint, drawing attention to his gesture of cutting the cloak. This work offers a view into the technical standards of mid-seventeenth-century Dutch print production, where the collaboration between painter and engraver was a standard method for disseminating religious and historical narratives to a wider audience. The print remains a clear example of the period's interest in combining classical iconography with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Dutch Golden Age.
