A detailed circular engraving of Saint Matthew by Dutch artist Zacharias Dolendo, featuring precise line work and classic Mannerist composition.
This circular engraving by the Dutch artist Zacharias Dolendo depicts Saint Matthew the Apostle. Dolendo, active in the late sixteenth century, was a skilled printmaker who often collaborated with other artists of the period, including Jacques de Gheyn II, whose name appears on this plate as the inventor of the design. The work reflects the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism, characterised by a focus on anatomical precision, expressive drapery, and a sophisticated use of line to create volume and texture.
The composition is contained within a circular frame, a format frequently employed for devotional series or decorative medallions. Saint Matthew is shown in a contemplative state, his gaze directed towards the book he holds. The inclusion of the halberd, his traditional attribute, identifies the figure clearly. Dolendo employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the saint and the folds of his garments, demonstrating the technical rigour expected of professional engravers in the Netherlands during this era. The light source is managed with precision, casting shadows that give the figure a sense of physical presence despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
This print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production in the late sixteenth century, where the roles of designer and engraver were often distinct. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition demonstrate the high standard of craftsmanship maintained by Dolendo. It offers a glimpse into the religious iconography that permeated European art during the period, providing a clear, focused representation of the apostle. The work remains a study in the application of burin techniques to achieve tonal variation and form, reflecting the technical expertise of the Dutch school of engraving.
