A narrative panel by Benozzo Gozzoli depicting the confrontation between Saint Peter and the sorcerer Simon Magus before the Emperor Nero.
This panel, attributed to the Florentine painter Benozzo Gozzoli, depicts a narrative episode from the apocryphal Acts of Peter. The scene captures the confrontation between Saint Peter and the sorcerer Simon Magus before the Emperor Nero. In the upper centre, Simon Magus is shown levitating through demonic assistance, while Saint Peter, positioned on the left, gestures towards him in prayer to bring about his fall. The fallen figure in the foreground represents the consequence of this divine intervention.
Gozzoli, a pupil of Fra Angelico, demonstrates his characteristic attention to narrative detail and clear, bright colour palettes. The composition is structured with a sense of theatricality, placing the figures within an architectural setting that suggests a Roman forum. The inclusion of soldiers bearing shields marked with the letters SPQR provides a classical context for the biblical event. The wooden scaffolding in the centre serves as a geometric element that balances the figures on either side, guiding the viewer's eye toward the levitating sorcerer above.
The work displays the refined technique typical of the Early Renaissance, with precise brushwork and a focus on the expressive gestures of the participants. The drapery of the robes is rendered with soft folds, and the faces are individualised, reflecting the artist's interest in human character. This piece was originally part of a predella, likely intended to sit beneath a larger altarpiece, which explains its horizontal orientation and focus on sequential storytelling. The clarity of the light and the crispness of the forms are indicative of Gozzoli's mature period, during which he balanced the influence of his master with his own decorative sensibilities.
