A late fifteenth-century depiction of Saint Remigius performing a miracle, rendered in the precise, linear style of the Swiss Gothic tradition.
This panel painting depicts a miracle attributed to Saint Remigius, the Bishop of Reims. The composition is divided into a domestic interior where the saint, dressed in his episcopal vestments and mitre, gestures towards a wooden barrel. The narrative focuses on his ability to replenish the wine supply, a common motif in hagiographic art of the late fifteenth century. Beside him sits a woman in contemporary period attire, her presence grounding the miraculous event within a recognisable household setting.
The artist employs a clear, linear style characteristic of late Gothic painting in the Swiss region. The spatial construction is somewhat compressed, typical of the period, with a tiled floor leading the eye toward the barrel and the table. The background features a window looking out onto a simplified green hill, while the interior walls are decorated with gold-leaf patterns, adding a sense of material luxury to the scene. The table is set with simple wooden plates, spoons, and drinking vessels, reflecting the modest reality of the figures despite the saintly nature of the subject.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of oil painting on wood panels, which allowed for the fine rendering of the saint's robes and the textures of the wooden furniture. The colour palette is dominated by the deep red of the bishop's mantle, contrasted against the muted greens of the woman's dress and the earthy tones of the floor and barrel. This piece provides a window into the devotional practices and visual culture of the late medieval period, where biblical and saintly narratives were frequently translated into familiar, everyday environments to make them more accessible to the viewer.
