Irene, accompanied by another woman, kneels beside him, carefully removing an arrow from his side. Above, three cherubic figures float, one holding a crown above Sebastian's head, symbolising his martyrdom. The background is dark and indistinct, pushing the figures into the foreground and heightening the drama of the scene. The colour palette is dominated by warm tones of red and brown, contrasting with the cool whites and greys of Sebastian's skin and the surrounding drapery.
