A late fifteenth-century drypoint engraving by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.
This drypoint engraving depicts the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, a subject frequently explored in late fifteenth-century Northern European art. The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, demonstrates a distinct approach to line and form in this work. The central figure of the saint is bound to a column, his posture conveying a sense of resignation. He is flanked by two archers, whose dynamic poses and period-specific attire provide a contrast to the stillness of the saint. The artist employs drypoint, a technique that allows for soft, velvety burr lines, which are visible in the shading of the figures and the textures of their clothing.
The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the column anchoring the scene. The archers are rendered with a degree of caricature common to the period, their features and garments reflecting the fashions of the late Middle Ages. The ground is sparsely detailed, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the three figures. The use of line is precise, capturing the tension in the bow and the musculature of the saint with economy. This print is a representative example of the graphic output from the Upper Rhine region during the late fifteenth century, where the transition from Gothic to Renaissance sensibilities began to emerge in printmaking. The work is held in several major museum collections, where it is studied for its technical execution and its contribution to the development of early print culture in Germany.
