An engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts Saint Thomas with fine, closely spaced lines that create a sense of volume and texture. The print showcases Carracci's skill as a draughtsman and printmaker.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Carracci, an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist, was a significant figure in the early Baroque period. He, along with his brother Annibale Carracci and cousin Ludovico Carracci, founded the Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna, which aimed to reform art education by emphasising drawing from life and studying the works of the Old Masters. In this print, Saint Thomas is shown standing, holding a long staff, and with a halo inscribed with his name. The figure is rendered with fine, closely spaced lines that create a sense of volume and texture. The saint's drapery is particularly detailed, with the lines following the contours of the fabric to suggest its weight and folds. The composition is simple and direct, focusing attention on the figure of the saint. The use of engraving allows for precise detail and a range of tonal values, from the dark shadows to the bright highlights. The print showcases Carracci's skill as a draughtsman and printmaker, as well as his interest in classical and Renaissance art.
