A classic woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder, depicting Saint Thomas with his traditional spear attribute, framed by decorative foliate motifs.
This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Saint Thomas, identifiable by the spear he holds, which serves as his traditional attribute. Cranach, a central figure in the German Renaissance, produced numerous series of apostles and saints during his time in Wittenberg. His graphic work often combined precise, descriptive line work with a sense of movement, particularly in the treatment of drapery.
The figure of Saint Thomas stands in a contrapposto stance, his weight shifted to one leg. The heavy, voluminous folds of his robes are rendered with rhythmic, parallel hatching, a technique that provides volume and texture to the garment. The saint is framed by two large, curling foliate motifs that rise from the ground, creating a decorative border that balances the composition. These organic, swirling forms contrast with the verticality of the saint and his spear.
In the background, a simplified landscape suggests a distant horizon, typical of the period's approach to spatial depth. The figure is barefoot, standing on uneven ground, which adds a grounded, human quality to the representation. The halo above his head is a simple, thin line, maintaining the clarity of the overall design. Cranach's ability to balance the solemnity of the religious subject with the decorative potential of the woodcut medium is evident here. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the Cranach workshop, where woodcuts were used to disseminate religious imagery to a wider audience. This piece offers a clear example of the graphic style prevalent in early sixteenth-century Germany, where the focus remained on the expressive power of the line and the clear articulation of form.
