Ferdinand Hodler, a Swiss painter born in 1853, is known for his symbolist and expressionist paintings. His work often explores themes of nature, mortality, and national identity. Hodler developed a style known as Parallelism, where figures and elements are arranged symmetrically to convey harmony and unity. His later work moved toward a more expressive use of colour and form. 'Saleve in Autumn' depicts the Saleve mountain near Geneva, a subject Hodler returned to repeatedly throughout his career.
