A nineteenth-century oil painting by Alfred Stevens depicting the biblical figure Salome in a restrained, atmospheric style.
Alfred Stevens, a Belgian painter active in Paris during the nineteenth century, produced this depiction of the biblical figure Salome. The work reflects the period interest in Orientalism and the femme fatale archetype, themes that occupied many European artists of the era. Stevens, known primarily for his depictions of fashionable women in domestic settings, here adopts a more dramatic, historical subject.
The composition centres on the figure of Salome, who is shown in a half-length pose. Her expression is calm, contrasting with the macabre nature of the narrative. She rests her hands near a shallow metal dish, which contains the head of John the Baptist. The artist employs a muted colour palette, relying on soft transitions of light and shadow to define the form of the subject and the folds of her drapery. The background remains dark and indistinct, which directs the viewer's attention to the figure and the specific objects placed before her.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's ability to render textures, from the metallic sheen of the dish to the delicate fabric of the subject's attire. The brushwork is controlled, adhering to the academic standards of the time while maintaining a focus on the psychological state of the sitter. Unlike more graphic interpretations of this subject, Stevens chooses a restrained approach, focusing on the stillness of the moment rather than the violence of the event. This work provides an example of how nineteenth-century painters reinterpreted classical and biblical narratives through the lens of contemporary aesthetic values, prioritising mood and atmosphere over narrative clarity.
