A dramatic 1900 oil painting by Lovis Corinth, depicting the biblical scene of Salome with the head of John the Baptist through expressive, gestural brushwork.
Lovis Corinth painted this version of Salome in 1900, a period when the biblical narrative of the daughter of Herodias held a particular fascination for European artists. Corinth approaches the subject with his characteristic vigour, employing a palette that balances flesh tones against the stark, cold blue of the basin containing the head of John the Baptist. The composition is crowded, focusing on the interaction between the central figure of Salome and the executioner, whose muscular form dominates the left side of the frame.
Corinth applies paint with a visible, energetic brushwork that avoids smooth blending. This technique creates a sense of immediate, raw movement. The lighting is theatrical, casting focus upon the macabre object held by Salome. Her expression is one of detached curiosity rather than overt triumph, a psychological choice that separates this work from more traditional depictions of the scene. The surrounding figures, including the partially obscured observers in the background, add to the claustrophobic atmosphere of the court.
As a leading figure in the Berlin Secession, Corinth moved away from the rigid academic standards of his training. This work demonstrates his transition towards a more subjective, expressive style. The anatomy is rendered with a focus on mass and weight, while the colour application remains loose and gestural. By choosing a subject steeped in historical and religious drama, Corinth explores themes of power, mortality, and the human condition. The painting remains a significant example of his ability to merge classical subject matter with the emerging sensibilities of early twentieth-century German art.
