Description
Saltom Bay near Whitehaven meets tall green-topped cliffs, their shadowed rock faces dropping into deep blue water beyond white coastal flowers beneath a clear Cumbrian summer sky.
Saltom Bay belongs to the Cumbrian coast south of Whitehaven, along the route towards St Bees Head. The surrounding coastline combines sandstone cliffs with a long mining history. Nearby Saltom Pit, England’s first under-sea coal mine, operated from 1729 until 1848.
Dark cliff faces run diagonally from the left towards a paler headland in the distance. Fresh green turf covers their uneven tops, while scattered boulders mark the narrow shore below. Blue water fills the open right side, meeting a foreground slope of long grass and small white flowers beneath broad summer clouds.
