A dramatic Baroque depiction of the biblical capture of Samson by Philistine soldiers, painted by Guercino in 1619.
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, painted this dramatic scene in 1619. It depicts the biblical narrative of Samson, who is being restrained by Philistine soldiers after Delilah has betrayed him. The composition is tightly packed, focusing on the physical struggle and the emotional tension between the figures. Guercino employs a strong chiaroscuro, using deep shadows to define the musculature of Samson and the metallic sheen of the soldiers' armour. The light source originates from the left, illuminating the central action while leaving the periphery in relative darkness.
Delilah is positioned in the foreground, her gaze directed towards the captive Samson. Her presence is calm, contrasting with the chaotic movement of the soldiers surrounding the hero. The artist captures the anatomical strain of the figures, particularly in the back of Samson, who is shown in a dynamic, twisting pose. The palette consists of earthy tones, deep reds, and cool blues, which are characteristic of the Bolognese school during the early seventeenth century. This work demonstrates Guercino's ability to manage complex multi-figure compositions while maintaining a clear narrative focus. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It remains a representative example of the artist's early period, showing the influence of Ludovico Carracci and the emerging Baroque style that prioritised emotional intensity and theatrical lighting.
