A monochrome sumizuri-e woodblock print by Sugimura Jihei Masataka, depicting a samurai and courtesan with a servant in an Edo-period interior.
This woodblock print, executed in the sumizuri-e style, captures a quiet moment within the pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan. Sugimura Jihei Masataka, an artist active during the late 17th century, employs bold, black ink lines to define the figures and their elaborate garments. The composition features a samurai and a courtesan seated together, their forms intertwined in a relaxed posture. A servant sits to the right, observing the pair. The artist pays close attention to the patterns on the kimonos, using geometric and floral motifs to create visual texture against the plain background.
Sumizuri-e prints are defined by their monochrome palette, relying entirely on the precision of the carved woodblock to convey form and mood. The absence of colour directs the viewer to the calligraphic quality of the lines and the balance of the composition. A candle stand on the left provides a subtle indication of the setting, suggesting an indoor scene during the evening hours. The inclusion of a letter or document on the floor adds a narrative element, hinting at a private exchange between the central figures.
Sugimura Jihei Masataka is known for his contributions to the early development of the Ukiyo-e genre. His work often focuses on the inhabitants of the Yoshiwara district, documenting the fashion and social interactions of the time. This print demonstrates the technical skill required to produce clear, expressive imagery using only black ink on paper. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, their postures reflecting the social conventions of the era. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Genroku period, where the depiction of urban life and leisure became a primary subject for artists.
