A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro, depicting the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu in a snowy scene.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu in the role of Otsuru. The work is a fine example of benizuri-e, a style of early colour printing that utilised a limited palette, typically rose-pink and green, applied to a monochrome base. The actor is shown standing in a snowy setting, holding a large parasol, which provides a sense of seasonal atmosphere.
Torii Kiyohiro was a member of the Torii school, a group of artists closely associated with the kabuki theatre in Edo. Their work often focused on the portrayal of actors, capturing their likenesses and specific stage personas for the public. The figure here wears a kimono featuring a distinctive checkered pattern, a design famously associated with Sanogawa Ichimatsu, which later became known as the Ichimatsu pattern in Japanese textile design.
The composition is balanced, with the vertical lines of the bamboo stalks in the background echoing the posture of the actor. The print demonstrates the technical constraints and aesthetic choices of the mid-eighteenth century, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of the performer rather than realistic portraiture. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the kimono and the delicate features of the actor's face. This print serves as a record of the theatrical culture of the period, documenting both the fashion and the popular performers who dominated the stage. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its production in the mid-Edo period, providing a tangible connection to the history of Japanese printmaking.
