A 1941 oil painting by Candido Portinari depicting a shoemaker at work, capturing the dignity of manual labour through expressive form and muted colour.
Candido Portinari, a central figure in Brazilian Modernism, produced Sapateiro de Brodowski (The Shoemaker of Brodowski) in 1941. This work reflects the artist's focus on the working-class individuals of his home town, Brodowski, in the state of São Paulo. Portinari often turned his attention to the labourers, coffee workers, and local tradespeople who defined the social fabric of rural Brazil during the mid-twentieth century.
The composition features a shoemaker seated on a stool, his posture slightly tilted as he works on a shoe. The figure is rendered with the exaggerated, muscular hands and arms that appear frequently in Portinari's oeuvre, suggesting the physical toll of manual labour. The shoemaker wears a simple white garment, which contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the background and the blue-tiled floor. His expression is one of quiet concentration, his gaze directed upwards, away from his task.
Portinari's technique in this piece combines a flattened perspective with expressive, gestural brushwork. The lines are bold and define the forms of the figure and the tools of his trade with clarity. The colour palette is restrained, relying on variations of blue, white, and brown to create a sense of atmosphere. By focusing on the daily life of a local artisan, Portinari documents the reality of his environment without resorting to idealisation. The work remains a clear example of how the artist used his training in European Modernism to interpret the specific social and cultural conditions of his native country. The focus on the individual worker, stripped of unnecessary detail, allows the viewer to engage directly with the subject's humanity and the dignity of his craft.
