A visionary illustration by William Blake depicting a scene from Milton's Paradise Lost, featuring Satan observing Adam and Eve.
This work is one of several illustrations William Blake produced for John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost. Blake depicts the moment Satan observes the intimacy of the first couple in the Garden of Eden. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the upper portion, a winged, serpentine Satan hovers against a dark, star-filled sky, his form coiled and watchful. Below, Adam and Eve recline amidst a lush, stylised bower, their figures rendered with the muscular, elongated proportions characteristic of Blake's draughtsmanship.
The use of watercolour allows for a delicate application of colour, particularly in the soft tones of the figures and the verdant foliage surrounding them. Blake employs a calligraphic line quality, using ink to define the contours of the bodies and the textures of the natural elements. The scene balances the serenity of the couple with the looming presence of the antagonist, creating a narrative tension that is central to the poem's themes of innocence and impending corruption.
Blake's approach to this subject is highly personal, reflecting his own visionary interpretation of Milton's text rather than a literal transcription. The figures are placed within a dreamlike, almost theatrical space, which is typical of his illustrative work from this period. The work demonstrates his technical skill in combining fluid ink lines with subtle washes of colour to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. This piece is part of a series that explores the fall of man, a subject that occupied Blake throughout his career as both a poet and a visual artist. The print captures the fine details of the original, preserving the nuances of his brushwork and the specific palette he chose to evoke the nocturnal setting of the scene.
