A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting a satirical scene of clerical gluttony and moral hypocrisy.
This engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder offers a sharp critique of ecclesiastical excess during the sixteenth century. The scene depicts two monks seated at a table, surrounded by an abundance of food, while a nun stands nearby. The composition employs visual irony to contrast the supposed asceticism of the religious orders with their actual indulgence. A monk uses a long rod to reach for a roasted bird, suggesting gluttony, while the presence of a dog and a cat in the foreground adds a layer of domestic disorder to the scene.
In the background, a group of figures appears to be engaged in prayer or study, providing a stark contrast to the foreground activities. The inclusion of a framed picture on the wall, depicting a biblical narrative, further emphasises the disconnect between the religious ideals represented in art and the behaviour of the individuals in the room. Collaert uses precise, fine lines to render the textures of the clothing, the wooden furniture, and the tiled floor, demonstrating the technical mastery common among Flemish printmakers of the period.
The work belongs to a tradition of moralising prints that were popular in the Netherlands during the Reformation era. These images functioned as social commentary, often using humour or grotesque elements to address corruption within the church. By placing the figures in a recognisable interior, Collaert brings the critique into a domestic space, making the message accessible to a wide audience. The print remains a valuable record of the visual language used to challenge institutional authority in the early modern period.
