A fine eighteenth-century etching by Jakob Wangner, featuring allegorical figures of Saturn and Venus framed within elaborate Rococo cartouches.
This print by Jakob Wangner, after a design by Johann Esaias Nilson, captures the ornamental spirit of the mid-eighteenth century. The composition presents two distinct allegorical figures, Saturn and Venus, housed within elaborate rocaille cartouches. These forms, characteristic of the Rococo period, blend naturalistic elements with asymmetrical, shell-like curves that define the aesthetic of the era.
On the left, Saturn is depicted with his traditional attributes: the scythe and the hourglass, symbols of time and mortality. The figure emerges from a swirling, organic frame, surrounded by sparse, dry foliage that contrasts with the more lush surroundings of the companion figure. On the right, Venus is presented amidst floral garlands, accompanied by a small putto holding a flaming heart. The contrast between the two figures creates a thematic balance between the cold finality of time and the warmth of romantic affection.
Wangner, a German engraver based in Augsburg, worked frequently with Nilson to produce prints that served as models for decorative arts, including furniture design, silverwork, and interior ornamentation. The fine line work demonstrates the technical precision required for such reproductive engravings, which were intended to circulate artistic ideas across European workshops. The inclusion of the plate number and the names of the inventor and publisher indicates that this piece was part of a larger series of allegorical or decorative subjects. The print remains a clear example of the period's preference for light, playful, and highly decorative imagery, where mythological subjects were adapted to suit the requirements of interior design and the taste for ornamental excess.
