Jawlensky aimed to convey inner spiritual states through simplified forms and intense colour. 'Saviour's Face: Martyr' presents a face rendered in broad, simplified strokes of colour. The face is dominated by a pale blue-green hue, with features indicated by lines and blocks of colour: a vertical red-brown line for the nose, a lavender shape for the mouth highlighted with yellow, and strokes of black, grey, and white suggesting hair and eyes. The overall effect is one of serene contemplation, despite the title's implication of suffering. The painting's simplified forms and bold colours reflect Jawlensky's Expressionist style, which sought to express emotional and spiritual truths rather than representational accuracy.
