A bold abstract composition by Patrick Heron, exploring the spatial energy and optical interaction of saturated orange, emerald, and yellow forms.
Patrick Heron was a central figure in the development of British abstraction during the mid-twentieth century. This work, painted between July and September 1976, demonstrates his preoccupation with the interaction of colour and form. Heron moved away from representational imagery to explore how flat planes of pigment behave when placed in proximity to one another.
In this composition, the large expanse of orange provides a textured, atmospheric field. Against this, Heron introduces organic, amoebic shapes in emerald green and a lighter yellow-orange. These forms do not sit behind or in front of the orange ground in a traditional sense. Instead, they appear to hover, creating a tension that relies entirely on the optical vibration between the hues. The edges of these shapes are soft yet deliberate, suggesting a fluidity that contrasts with the static nature of the canvas.
Heron often spoke of the autonomy of colour, arguing that it possesses its own spatial energy. By stripping away narrative or symbolic content, he forces the viewer to engage directly with the physical properties of the paint. The application of the orange field shows a subtle variation in brushwork, which prevents the surface from becoming entirely uniform. This choice adds a tactile quality to the work, grounding the abstract shapes in a material reality.
This piece reflects the artist's mature period, during which he refined his vocabulary of floating forms. His work from the 1970s is characterised by a confidence in scale and a rigorous investigation into how the eye perceives depth through colour alone. The absence of a horizon line or vanishing point ensures that the viewer remains focused on the surface of the canvas, experiencing the work as a direct encounter with light and pigment.
