Winifred Knights produced this large-scale work for the altar of the chapel at Canterbury Cathedral. The composition follows a narrative structure, presenting distinct episodes from the life of Saint Martin of Tours within a unified, expansive setting. Knights employs a deliberate, measured approach to form, drawing inspiration from Italian Quattrocento masters such as Piero della Francesca. The figures possess a sculptural quality, their drapery rendered with precise, smooth transitions that suggest a stillness bordering on the metaphysical.

The left side of the canvas depicts the saint in his earlier life, including the iconic moment of sharing his cloak. The right side transitions into an interior space, showing the saint in his final moments, attended by celestial figures. The colour palette is carefully controlled, utilising cool blues, muted earth tones, and sharp accents of red to guide the viewer across the narrative sequence. The background features a stylised, arid topography that reflects the artist's interest in the Italian countryside, a subject she studied extensively during her time as a Rome Scholar.

Knights was known for her meticulous preparatory process, often creating numerous sketches and studies before committing to the final canvas. This work demonstrates her ability to synthesise historical religious iconography with a modern, clean aesthetic. The spatial arrangement is intentionally flattened, rejecting traditional atmospheric perspective in favour of a clear, staged clarity.
