A detailed scene from The Tale of Genji, rendered in the traditional Tosa school style with architectural perspectives and courtly figures.
This work belongs to the Tosa school, a lineage of painters associated with the Japanese imperial court. Tosa Mitsunori, active during the early Edo period, maintained the traditional Yamato-e style, which focuses on Japanese subjects and aesthetic sensibilities. The composition employs the fukinuki-yatai technique, or blown-off roof, which allows the viewer to observe the interior of a Heian-period palace from an elevated, diagonal perspective. This method removes architectural barriers, revealing the private lives of court figures within their domestic spaces.
The figures are rendered with fine, controlled lines, characteristic of the hikime-kagibana style, where eyes are depicted as simple slits and noses as small hooks. Their long, flowing hair and layered silk robes suggest the refined atmosphere of the Heian court. The scene is partially obscured by stylized gold clouds, a common device in narrative handscrolls to denote the passage of time or to separate distinct areas of action. These clouds provide a sense of depth and atmospheric mystery, contrasting with the rigid, geometric lines of the palace architecture.
The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century, remains a primary source of inspiration for Japanese visual arts. Mitsunori captures a quiet moment of courtly life, emphasizing the stillness and decorum expected of the aristocracy. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and subtle ink washes, reflects the age of the paper and the restrained aesthetic of the period. This print offers a window into the classical literary tradition of Japan, presented through the technical precision of the Tosa school.
