A formal portrait engraving by Gérard Edelinck, depicting the French official Scévole de Sainte-Marthe within an oval frame.
This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts Scévole de Sainte-Marthe, a French official who served as President and Treasurer of France at Poitiers. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris under the patronage of Louis XIV, earned a reputation for his technical precision and his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of copperplate engraving.
The portrait is presented within a classic oval frame, a standard format for seventeenth-century portraiture. The subject wears a ruff collar and a cap, attire consistent with the late sixteenth-century period of his life, though the engraving itself dates to the later seventeenth century. Edelinck employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the fabric, the lace of the ruff, and the contours of the face. The lighting is controlled, creating a sense of volume in the subject's features while maintaining the clarity required for a formal portrait.
At the base of the oval frame, a coat of arms is included, providing a heraldic identification of the subject. Below this, a cartouche contains the inscription identifying the sitter and his titles. This work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the French school of engraving during the reign of the Sun King. Edelinck was known for his work after artists such as Hyacinthe Rigaud and Charles Le Brun, and his skill in rendering character and texture is evident here. The print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the French administration, where portraiture functioned as a means of recording the status and lineage of public officials.
